Simon Cook

I was fifteen, and sat in the school library half-heartedly revising one afternoon, when I spied a book I’d never seen before – a Pelican paperback full of interviews with world-class filmmakers. By bedtime I’d not only read it from cover to cover, I’d also decided that I was going to be a filmmaker too.

It took four long years to get to London, but from my grotty bedsit in the Portobello Road I soon got the runner’s job on a feature film called ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’. Not long after I’d started the producer Leon Clore found he had to keep asking the production staff, ‘where is that boy?’ only to be told time and again that I was probably in the cutting rooms. As frustrating as he must have found this, once the film had wrapped, he said, ‘it hasn’t escaped my attention you like the cutting rooms’, and immediately offered me the job of assistant film editor in the commercials company he owned in Soho. An act of kindness I shall never forget.

Three glorious years in the cutting rooms followed – surely one of the best classrooms for any aspiring director – and from there I financed my first short film which quickly led to me directing my first music video, for Mike Oldfield at Virgin Records.

Since then, I’ve spent many happy years directing corporates, commercials, documentaries, music videos, drama and TV. I’ve won some awards along the way, been to some extraordinary places and met some even more extraordinary people, not least, one of the few Wehrmacht soldiers to survive the horrific Battle of Stalingrad. An odd example perhaps, but that’s what I love about this job, you just never know who you’re going to meet next…

So, whether you’re making a straightforward interview based film, or one with some bright and noisy fireworks attached to it, give me a call!

“I have worked extensively with Simon as a TV presenter. Being directed by him was one of the happiest and most productive experiences I have had. Simon is highly experienced, extremely creative and always manages to be professional as well as easy going (and in turn, he puts everyone else at their ease, which produces the best work). I have no hesitation in recommending him 100% as a director.”

“Simon is a director with clear vision, but is happy, indeed encourages, input from his cast and crew. He thereby runs a happy ship, and the group benefits from creative freedom. A joy to work for, and a quirky intellect.”
